Forthcoming FP7 health calls: be ready and choose the right thread

There will be a series of new opportunities in the Forthcoming FP7 Health research programme call and 2010 work programme will be implemented through a number of calls:

  • a single-stage call, with an indicative budget of €333.5m
  • a two-stage call, with an indicative budget of €205m
  • a call for a 'joint research initiative Commission-COLIPA' on alternatives to animal testing, with an indicative budget of €25m from the EC, plus €25m from COLIPA. (found in the 'Responding to EU policy needs' in the work programme)
  • There is a special call for Africa, in coordination with the Food and Environment themes, in which 6 topics are included under the heading 'Better health for Africa', with an indicative budget of €39m. These topics will be explained in the work programme the work programme.
  • there will be the horizontal call for ERA-NETs, in which 3 CA topics are included, with an indicative budget of €6m.
    In addition,
  • In response to recent events, there is a new call on emerging diseases in coordination with the Food theme. For this coordinated call, an extra topic (2.3.3-4) has been added to the work programme under the heading 'New and Re-emerging Epidemics'. An additional budget of €12m will be mobilised from 3rd country contributions to fund this new initiative.
  • The preparation of the implementation of one area ('The Brain and Brain-related Diseases') is still ongoing. A budget of €43m has been set aside for this area. Once the approach has been finalised, a subsequent amendment to the work programme will be made to publish the topics.


    Through these calls, a total of €620.5 million of the 2010 budget will be utilised, with a further €43m in reserve for the 'Brain' call still under consideration. Indicative figures are included for each call.

    Please note that although all the calls are due to be published on 30 July 2009, they will have different closing dates this year.

Assuming the calls are published on time, the deadlines will be as follows:

  • single-stage call 19 November 2009
  • two-stage call 29 October 2009
  • Influenza call 29 October 2009
  • Africa call 14 January 2010
  • ERA NET call 19 January 2010
  • EC-COLIPA 3 February 2010
